Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about HSAs and HSA Trackr.
Is HSA Trackr free?
The free plan covers everything most people need - 5 receipt scans a month, 2 family members, AI scanning, CSV exports. No ads, no trial that expires. We have a Pro plan at $5.99/mo for power users who want unlimited everything and advanced tax reports, but the free tier is genuinely useful, not a teaser.
Is my medical data secure?
Everything is encrypted and stored on infrastructure we'd trust with our own medical records (because we do). Nobody sees your receipts. Nobody sees your expenses. You can nuke your entire account whenever you want.
Can I really reimburse myself years later?
Yep. The IRS doesn't put a time limit on HSA reimbursements. Paid cash for a root canal in 2020? You can pull that money tax-free from your HSA in 2030. The only rule: the expense has to have happened after you opened the HSA. Keep your receipts.
Does it work with any HSA provider?
We don't connect to your HSA at all - we just track what you spent so you know what's reimbursable. Fidelity, Lively, HealthEquity, whoever. Doesn't matter.
Do I need to understand HSA rules to use this?
Nope. Add your receipts, and the app figures out the categories. If something looks iffy, it'll flag it. You don't need to read IRS Publication 502 - that's our job.
Are my uploaded receipts stored?
Yes. Every receipt image you upload is stored securely in encrypted cloud storage and linked to the expense record. You can download all your receipts as a ZIP file any time from the Export page. Deleting an expense also removes the attached receipt. If you close your account, all data is permanently deleted.
Can I export my data?
Your data, your call - three formats. CSV for your expense list (great for accountants). ZIP for all your receipt images in one archive. Printable tax report as a Form 8889 worksheet you can review and print to PDF. All on the Export page, one click each.
What is an HSA?
A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a tax-advantaged account for people with a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). It has a triple tax advantage: contributions are tax-deductible, growth is tax-free, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. No other account in the US tax code gets all three.
How does HSA reimbursement work?
Pay for medical expenses out of pocket, save the receipts, and reimburse yourself from your HSA whenever you want. There is no requirement to use your HSA debit card at the point of sale. Many people let their HSA grow invested while paying cash, then reimburse themselves months or years later.
Is there a deadline for HSA reimbursement?
No. The IRS has no deadline for HSA reimbursements. The only rule is that the expense must have occurred after you opened your HSA. You could pay for a doctor visit in 2024 and reimburse yourself in 2034. That is the entire basis of the shoebox strategy.
Can I use HSA Trackr for my spouse and dependents?
Yes. You can track expenses for anyone covered under your HDHP - spouse, children, and other tax dependents. Add family members in the app and tag each expense to the right person.
What file formats can I upload for receipts?
PDF, JPG, PNG, and HEIC are all supported. Take a photo with your phone, screenshot an insurance EOB, or upload a PDF from your provider portal. The AI scanner handles all of them.
How accurate is the AI receipt scanning?
The AI extracts date, amount, provider, and category with high accuracy. That said, always review the extracted data before saving - edge cases like handwritten receipts or unusual formats can trip up any scanner. You can manually edit every field.
