What is Employer Contribution?
Employer contributions are amounts your employer deposits directly into your HSA. Many employers offer HSA contributions as a benefit, especially to offset the higher out-of-pocket costs of HDHPs. This is essentially free money for your healthcare.
Employer contributions count toward your annual contribution limit. If your employer contributes $1,000 to your HSA and the individual limit is $4,150, you can only contribute $3,150 yourself.
Employer HSA contributions are excluded from your taxable income and aren't subject to FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare). This makes them more valuable dollar-for-dollar than regular salary. Employer contributions are often made in a lump sum at the start of the year or distributed across paychecks.
