Pre-Tax
Money contributed to your HSA before income taxes are calculated, reducing your taxable income.
What is Pre-Tax?
Pre-tax contributions are deducted from your income before taxes are calculated. When you contribute to an HSA through payroll deduction, the money comes out before federal income tax, state income tax (in most states), and FICA taxes are applied.
For example, if you earn $5,000 in a pay period and contribute $200 to your HSA, you're only taxed on $4,800. At a 25% combined tax rate, that $200 contribution only "costs" you $150 in take-home pay.
If you contribute to an HSA outside of payroll (like from a bank account), those contributions are "above-the-line" deductions on your tax return. You still get the income tax benefit, but not the FICA tax savings. Payroll contributions are slightly more valuable because of this.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between pre-tax and post-tax?
Pre-tax contributions reduce your taxable income immediately. Post-tax contributions (like Roth) are made with already-taxed money but can be withdrawn tax-free.
Do payroll HSA contributions avoid FICA taxes?
Yes. HSA contributions through payroll avoid Social Security and Medicare taxes (7.65%). Direct contributions only avoid income tax.
Are there any downsides to pre-tax contributions?
Slightly lower Social Security benefits since you're reducing the income used to calculate benefits. For most people, the immediate tax savings outweigh this.
