Provider guide · First American Bank HSA

Reimburse yourself from your First American Bank HSA, and keep the proof.

Many First American Bank customers pay medical bills out of pocket, leave the HSA invested, and pay themselves back later. Here is how First American Bank handles the payback, where it keeps receipts, and how to hold on to proof that stays with you even if you switch providers.

How to reimburse yourself from First American Bank

Request a reimbursement to yourself in First American's Health Account Services consumer portal; direct deposit to a linked bank account is the faster option.

Where First American Bank keeps your receipts

First American offers an online and mobile virtual shoebox for expenses and receipts: snap a photo and attach it to a claim.

A provider's receipt storage belongs to that account. People change jobs, roll their HSA to a lower-fee provider, or close an account years before they reimburse themselves, and the proof needs to outlive all of that.

Keep a record that isn't tied to First American Bank

  • Every receipt, EOB and proof of payment in one private household record that moves with you between providers.
  • The eligibility ruling saved with each expense, so you know what qualified and why years later.
  • A proof checklist for each record: itemized receipt, proof of payment, and any EOB, prescription or letter of medical necessity it needs.
  • Partial reimbursements tracked against each expense, so the same receipt is never claimed twice.
  • A free ZIP archive of every receipt and record, plus a printable Form 8889 worksheet on Founding Household.

There is no deadline to pay yourself back

“A distribution from an HSA in the current year can be used to pay or reimburse expenses incurred in any prior year as long as the expenses were incurred after the HSA was established. Thus, there is no time limit on when the distribution must occur.”

To keep the withdrawal tax-free, you must keep records showing it paid or reimbursed a qualified medical expense, that the expense wasn't paid or reimbursed from another source, and that it wasn't taken as an itemized deduction. See IRS Publication 969.

Tax forms

First American posts tax forms, including Form 1099-SA, under the Message Center tab online.

Your provider's forms are the official figures. HSA Trackr's worksheet lines up your own records against them: withdrawals taken in the year, the receipts behind them, and anything missing proof.
